Portrait Artist - 2010 Interview - Portrait Society of America

1. Can you tell us some information about the subject and inspiration for your Portrait?

When I first saw Lawrence I realized immediately that one day I would paint his portrait. I did not know when and how but I knew that I wanted to do it. I would say he is a man who draws you to him and it is difficult not to become interested in him. For a while he was ill and  his looks changed considerably. He did not play his guitar in church any more.

I first met my neighbor Aapo not long after my beloved father died.

Though I’m not especially religious, I was convinced that my father, a General Electric employee by day and an amateur artist in his spare time, had planted an artist in my newly adopted state of California.  My father and I shared a passion for painting.  I don’t think we believed places really existed in time or in memory unless they had been observed, interpreted and captured by an artist.

It was standing room only yesterday 12.09.07 at a wonderful portrait demonstration by Aapo Pukk.

In a brilliant, energized, three hour demo Pukk, who won First Honors and Best Portfolio at PSA’s 2007 ( Portrait Society of America) International Portrait Competition, explained not only his painting technique but also his mental approach to painting a sitter which captivated and uplifted a crowd of about 35, many who had driven quite some distance to attend.

Birthday Treats and Aapo Pukk

demo...Yesterday after seeing off my daughter, running over to Mom's for a bit and then picking up a Christmas tree for our little guy, Tyler, I gave myself a treat and drove to the California Art Institute where my art teacher, Johanna Spinks, (a great teacher and artist herself) had arranged a demonstration by Estonian Portrait Painter, Aapo Pukk, who won best portfolio at the Portrait Society of America conference this year along with first honors in the International Portrait Competition. What a special event to watch!

Southern Californians take a lot for granted: the weather, the beach, wonderful restaurants that offer fresh and healthy cuisine of all sorts, the friendliness of a citizenry that comfortably wear jeans and running shoes, a laissez faire attitude that even the traffic on PCH cannot undermine.
